I’m a storyteller. In everyday life, I can be shy and introverted, but when I write, I come alive. Writing isn’t just a craft for me, it’s my sanctuary. It’s where I turn my experiences, dreams, and imagination into characters, worlds, and stories that feel real enough to live in.

Life has not been easy for me. I live with PTSD, anxiety, depression, BPD, trauma-induced memory loss, POTS, and the lasting effects of chemotherapy. I have survived breast cancer once and cervical cancer twice. After going through treatments and procedures that never seemed to address why it kept returning, I became determined to understand what my body needed. I drew on my apothecary knowledge, changed the way I cared for myself, and began using food as part of my medicine. Creating through all of this is not always easy, but it gives me a reason to keep going. I write to inspire others to take bold leaps, but I also write to preserve myself and document my journey. If there ever comes a day when I cannot remember it all, my stories will still be there to remind me of what I survived, how far I came, and every victory I fought for.

Storytelling became one of the ways I learned how to survive. Roleplay gave me a safe place to face my pain, explore different parts of myself, and imagine outcomes beyond what I had lived through. Through the characters I created and embodied, I found strength I did not always know I had. I learned that I could return to my own story, reshape it, and keep writing until it sounded like victory.

That healing journey became the foundation for my 35-issue series, As My Name Changes. The story grew out of everything I had to survive, everything I learned about myself, and every time I chose to keep going. It carries the weight of my battles, but it also holds the joy, power, and victory I found along the way.

The colors of As My Name Changes are deeply personal to me. The rich blues honor my grandmother, and the regal purples reflect my own spirit. Together, they became the foundation of the world I was creating. I added gold, ivory stone, and marble to bring in the beauty, elegance, and sense of luxury that we both loved. Every color and texture carries a piece of us.

My grandmother taught me that modesty and beauty could exist side by side. The world of As My Name Changes draws from the grandeur I associate with Texas and Lake Charles, Louisiana, along with the bold creativity, freedom, and imagination that California gave me. It also carries the elegance, pride, and passion woven through my Creole heritage. As I learned more about my maternal family, I discovered roots reaching into Nigeria and other parts of West and Central Africa. I also learned the story of my grandmother’s father, who was abandoned as an infant, rescued by an Indigenous woman, and raised within Cherokee and Blackfoot communities. That single act of care changed the course of my entire family. Without it, the generations that came after him, including me, may never have existed.

I want to share the many layers of my heritage and the history that shaped me. My work honors the people whose courage, care, and choices made my life possible, including those whose names I may never know. It also gives me space to explore my roots in Nigeria and other parts of West and Central Africa, and to bring more of that history into the artwork and stories I create. As My Name Changes is more than a comic series to me. It is a celebration of ancestry, a reflection of the strength passed down through my family, and an ongoing journey into the truth of who I am.
